Nottinghamshire’s finest motte and bailey castle

The village of Laxton in central Nottinghamshire is noted for the
survival of the open field farming tradition.
For much of the Middle Ages Laxton was the administrative centre of the Royal Forest of
Sherwood and its castle, the caput of the de Caux Barony, the focus of
that administration. Laxton
castle stands on high ground to the north of the village.
It consists of two principal elements, a small strongly defended
motte and inner bailey and a larger, less strongly
defended, outer bailey.
Since 2003 archaeologists at Birmingham and Nottingham Universities have been investigating Laxton castle as part of a long-term field project training students in measured and geophysical survey. Find out about Laxton, its castle and the survey in the pages below. |
